English opening!

A positional choice by Caruana, who's looking to gain a practical edge in a drawn-out game due to superior control over the light squares in the middle of the board.

Caruana surprises from the get-go

As expected, Caruana comes prepared with an offbeat approach! This line is rarely played at the top level, as the main theory suggests that MVL should be fine in these positions.

Let's see what Caruana has cooked up!

00:26 e4
2

This is the strongest, theoretical approach, and MVL remains in familiar waters. The early contention of the dark squares gives MVL his piece of the center, giving Caruana a harder time getting control over the dark squares in general.

00:46 e5
3

Caruana gets his knight out, getting ready to begin his contention for the dark squares in the middle of the board.

02:41 Nf3
3

MVL fianchettos his bishop, giving the dark squares additional support while preparing to get his king to safety.

00:19 Bg7
4

Caruana now fights for control over the dark squares by going for a pawn break. MVL will have to capture the pawn, but this springs his dark-squared bishop into life along the long diagonal.

00:07 d4
4

MVL captures Caruana's pawn as expected.

00:13 exd4
5

Caruana immediately recaptures the pawn with his knight.

00:05 Nxd4
5

Rather than contesting the control over the dark squares immediately, MVL keeps more pieces in play and immediately pressures Caruana's pawn.

03:23 Nf6
6

The threat against Caruana's pawn in the center is promptly defended.

00:15 Nc3
6

MVL gets his king to safety by castling.

00:05 O-O
7

Caruana continues his normal development by getting his bishop into the game, lending additional cover to his knight.

00:43 Be3

Nothing extraordinary has happened out of the opening, but MVL is the first to spend considerable time. Caruana's grip on the light squares the center has left him with a space advantage out of the opening, giving MVL getting control over the middle of the board.

7

MVL prepares to go for a pawn break along the light squares. If he is able to get this break in without concessions, he will quickly be able to achieve an equal position with little to show for Caruana's opening choice.

08:45 c6
8

Caruana stops MVL's plans dead in its tracks by quickly kicking away MVL's knight from controlling the center.

00:31 e5
8

MVL's knight is left with little options but to retreat.

00:05 Ne8
9

Caruana sacrifices a pawn!!

Caruana reveals his preparation. opting to immediately start the attack rather than defending the pawn that was under attack! Both players are clearly still familiar with the position, and the question remains whether Caruana has something special prepared in this particular line.

In either case, this position just heated up considerably!

00:08 h4
9

MVL immediately responds by not grabbing the seemingly free pawn. Taking it would allow Caruana to immediately continue his attack against MVL's king, creating a very difficult situation for him.

Therefore, he instead puts more pressure on the pawn, reapplying the threat. The difference is now that MVL can grab the material with a tempo on Caruana's knight, which would give MVL the opportunity to trade queens and nullify the attack.

00:04 d6
10

Caruana in deep preparation

Caruana avoids the trade of pawns, instead opting to push his pawn further up the board! This pawn is still ripe for the taking, but either way of capturing it would lead MVL having to give concessions to his king safety.

07:08 e6
10

Opening success for Caruana

After some thought, MVL ends up accepting the sacrifice, as no other beneficial option was available.

Caruana remains on the offensive, and this can quickly get out of hand for MVL if he doesn't continue his precise defensive operation.

10:03 fxe6
11

Caruana breaks down the light squares!

Caruana's successful preparation continues as he is playing very strong moves at blazing speed. His intention is to break down MVL's kingside, abusing the fact that he has forced MVL's defensive knight to an unoptimal square.

The attack is looking immensely strong, and this will be a very tough challenge for MVL to handle.

00:15 h5
11

??MISTAKE??

MVL already goes wrong, giving Caruana a clear advantage! This move allows Caruana to completely break down MVL's structure in front of his king, and he is in big trouble against Caruana's attack.

Immaculate preparation has left Caruana with a close-to-winning advantage after only 11 moves!

11:03 Nf6
12

After a huge think, Caruana eventually finds the best move! MVL's kingside will now be pried open, leaving Caruana with clear weaknesses to exploit right in front of his king.

Caruana immediately puts pressure on the pawn that has been left undefended.

00:26 Bd3
13

Freeroll for Caruana

MVL plays an intermezzo, hitting Caruana's knight to allow his light-squared bishop to defend the pawn. The problem on the light squares remains, however, as Caruana can immediately apply more pressure to MVL's structure by rerouting his knight afterward.

The game is far from over, but all of Caruana's pieces are soon aimed towards the attack.

Caruana attack is close to risk-free. He couldn't have asked for a better start to this game!

MVL is falling apart

As expected, MVL gets his light-squared bishop into a defensive position. Caruana is left with the choice of trading the bishop or get his knight into action immediately, both being tempting and strong options.

02:34 Bf5

There's still room for Caruana to go wrong, but MVL's kingside is extremely vulnerable however you slice it. The only hope for MVL is that Caruana plays imprecisely in this critical phase, allowing him to coordinate his pawns in a way that restricts Caruana's mobility.

Even an endgame would leave MVL with problems here, as his pawns in the center will remain incredibly weak for the remainder of the game. This comes in addition to his exposed king, giving a potential initiative and attacking chances along the open file.

15

A mistake?

Caruana plays the second-best move, leaving the tension between the bishops as is. His initiative remains, but now MVL will at least be able to restrict some of Caruana's pieces, making the direct attack much less deadly.

16:29 Nh4
15

MVL finds the only move to stay in the game!

MVL manages to get Caruana's bishop away from the attack of the weakest point in his position. His defensive task remains extremely difficult, but there's at least some small hope left for the Frenchman to save the draw now.

01:56 e4
16

Caruana is forced to side-step the attack against his bishop.

00:05 Be2
16

MVL provides additional support to his light squares with his queen, hoping to solidify his position on the kingside. When all is said, MVL remains a pawn up, and if Caruana can't find the precise way forward, the position can suddenly turn around.

01:14 Qd7
17

Caruana grabs MVL's bishop, winning the bishop pair and improving his control over the light squares.

06:23 Nxf5
17

MVL fights back

MVL recaptures the piece with his pawn, repairing his broken pawn structure.

MVL has managed to somewhat stabilize his position, and Caruana's advantage dampens as a result. The danger is still far from over, but MVL has avoided ending up in an objectively lost position.

Caruana finishes his development

Caruana has now managed to coordinate all his pieces and is ready to start a dangerous offensive on the kingside. The question for him now is how to break through.

20

The pressure continues

Caruana improves the placement of his rook, potentially looking to go for a pawn break on the kingside and getting ready to double his rooks along the open file at a later stage.

MVL is purely on the defensive and needs to find very difficult moves to avoid getting crushed once Caruana strikes.

04:09 Rh3
20

??MISTAKE??

MVL was already in trouble, but this decision makes things worse. Caruana can now infiltrate the position with his queen by trading his bishop, and MVL's king remains wide open.

MVL needs nothing short of a miracle to be able to hold onto this position.

08:35 Nc5
21

??BLUNDER??

Very surprising choice by Caruana, missing a huge opportunity! Instead of taking the knight, Caruana instead makes a noncommittal move, and MVL fights on!

09:41 Rdh1

This decision was unfathomable, as the way forward for Caruana if he chose the best move seemed pretty straightforward. There's no doubt that Caruana maintains his pressure, but missing this opportunity may potentially have lost Caruana the full point.

21

MVL finds the Best move!!

Not wasting the opportunity, MVL capitalizes on Caruana's mistake by moving his king. This allows him to contest Caruana's control over the only open file, making his attack much less dangerous.

06:15 Kf7
22

LOW ON TIME!!

Caruana now has only 6 minutes left to make the last 18 moves before the time control. While his position is no worse, one mistake could suddenly make this game turn around completely.

Caruana decides to oppose MVL's bishop, still looking to progress his attack on the kingside. As long as MVL manages to trade off rooks, his king should no longer be in serious danger.

16:17 Bd4
22

MVL out of immediate danger

MVL sidesteps with his queen to provide extra support to his knight on the kingside.

While the position now is objectively balanced, Caruana's huge time disadvantage could give MVL chances to take the initiative if he manages to maintain complications in the position. Playing 18 moves with 6 minutes left will not be an easy task for Caruana, especially with a lot of pieces on the board.

24

Caruana finally trades away his bishop and gets his queen into play, but this maneuver has come too late. MVL now has enough coordination to keep his position intact, and his king is much safer than just a couple of moves ago.

00:16 Qf4
24

MVL quickly defends the pawn that was under attack.

03:31 Qe6
25

Only one minute left for Caruana!

Caruana sidesteps with his to avoid any tactics that could occur along the dark squares later down the line. His position is fine, maintaining pressure against MVL's weak points.

The bigger issue for Caruana is his time situation, as he is left with only one minute on his clock.

01:52 Kb1
25

MVL decides enough is enough and finally opposes Caruana's rooks along the open file. This simplifies the position, making it much easier to play with little time on the clock.

We're in the endgame now!

The position that has ensued from the mass trade of pieces has led to a situation where Caruana still maintains some pressure against MVL's weak points. He still is a pawn down but has more than enough compensation for it due to his activity.

All hope for Caruana to play for a win is not lost, but MVL should be able to hold on here.

Heading towards a draw

Caruana manages to win the pawn back, but with the exchange of queens, this should be an almost trivial draw from here.

MVL has managed to hold on and should have very little trouble finding a way to keep things under control.

As the position has simplified, there is very little left to play for on either side. While Caruana has a passed pawn on the kingside, getting it further up the board will be close to impossible due to MVL's active pieces and the bishops being of opposite colors.

Caruana's miss may have cost him the tournament victory!

A very promising position slipped between Caruana's fingers after failing to find a winning attack. The game was incredibly disappointing for the American chess legend, as he caught MVL completely off-guard with strong preparation but failed to convert his advantage.

Caruana managed to completely outplay MVL in the opening, playing a pawn sacrifice that led to MVL's light squares in front of his king being broken down. Caruana then had several opportunities to push his advantage into a winning position, but several mistakes at key moments allowed MVL to slip away from the danger.

After spending huge amounts of time trying to figure out the complications in the middlegame, Caruana ended up with an extremely low amount of time left on his clock, forcing him to pull the emergency brake and go for an endgame with very little to play for.

Not being able to convert his advantage has greatly decreased his chances of winning the tournament, as he now likely needs to win with the black pieces tomorrow to be in contention for first place.

A decisive winner in this game may decide the Superbet Classic 2025!

With only two more rounds to go, we have a monster matchup on our hands. Two of the four tournament leaders and titans of the game face off in round 8, and we can be certain that Caruana will make the most of having the white pieces.

Both Caruana and MVL have had a good tournament so far, but neither has been able to pull a winning blow within the last couple of rounds. A draw may ruin both players' chances of ending the tournament on top of the podium, as Firouzja and Pragg rival their score of 4/7 points. Caruana, playing his last game with the white pieces, is especially incentivized to pull out his strongest preparation in this game and is far from unlikely to take risks to make a decisive result.

This may also bode well for MVL, as overpressing for an advantage may give him chances for a full point. MVL's task is easier said than done, though, as the former world championship contender seems to be in fantastic shape.
